Southport Congregational Church
Around the curve of Pequot Avenue at number 524 is another landmark structure, one of the few stone buildings in town. It is the Gothic-style edifice of the Southport Congregational Church. Built in 1874, it replaced an earlier Greek Revival wood-framed building covered in white deep boards with a traditional New England spire. The present building, with its port cochere providing a protected entrance to parishioners of the carriage trade, with its stained-glass windows and medieval symbolism, is a far cry from the stern meeting houses of earlier generations and marks a real departure from traditional Congregational practices. The building was designed by Bridgeport architects, Lambert and Bunnell. Turn off the tape and walk straight ahead to the intersection of Pequot Avenue and Center Street.
